RedBox 12″ Operation Astronaut

So this figure is absolutely insane! it is a very, VERY cheap delicate plastic and copies down to the hands an original 1960s-70s GI Joe without the inverted thumb. They are incredibly rare and super fragile! They come with their Space Sled and some kind of backpack to simulate flying through space (string inside, etc). He is typically VERY expensive and a truly great figure I am proud to own!!

I stumbled upon your blog because I have a space style jumpsuit and couldn’t figure out who or what it went to. After many hours of digging I learned it’s the space suit for Redbox Astronaut. There really isn’t much information about these figures so I’m thankful to read your blog!

The general design of the suit—dark bands on white—might look slightly familiar. But the Space Sled and the box art of the figure on the sled are direct knockoffs of Mattel’s Man in Space from 1966-69. The four-panel art on the back are also based on Matt’s card backs. Matt was a 6 inch wire-based bendy figure, with 4 astronauts, 2 aliens, a space station, lots of vehicles and accessories. (One of the easiest accessories to find is a hardback Big Little Book from 1969.) There’s also a 12-inch figure (Captain Laser, seemingly from an unrelated Japanese line but officially in this line) which was retooled into two 12-inch Mego-style figures for the 1978 Battlestar Galactica line from Mattel (one human Colonial Warrior, one robotic Cylon Warrior.) (Also, in the many years since, there have been couple of Galactica Mego-style retro figures, one in 8 inch and one in 12 inch.) Also in the late 60s, one company released a line of aliens, and a second company released a line of robots, both which many kids of the era played with Matt though they weren’t really Matt-like.
