You start with Mattel’s Big Jim and his karate chopping action….then you change the head and give it a famous tv star’s head, costume and change the karate chop hand to an axe swinging arm. The bulging bicep feature was carried into the Grizzly Adams figure too. Put him in a cool Big Jim style box and give him a Native American companion to have adventures with, and you have Grizzly Adams, played by Dan Haggerty from the popular 1970s television series. Sporting the same style Mattel Big Jim body and back button, this figure fit right in with Mattel’s then current inventory of toys. Nakoma, his Native American friend was the only other character produced. Ben (his grizzly bear friend) was advertised in a set in Mattel’s toy catalog at the time, but that set unfortunately never came to fruition.
