Cashing in on the 12″ GI Joe craze of the 1970s, Ideal Toy company (a popular company in its day) made a carry case playset that was themed for the military action figures in the 12″ format. The cases were more than just vinyl carry cases. They also turned into playsets! This one in particular not only had great graphics of action packed soldiers at war, but you can also turn a part out and it becomes a sentry gate for passing vehicles. The front flap that opens and folds down has tire tracks in the “dirt” to help convey the fluidity of the vinyl as a playset. It has space inside to hold your 12″ GI Joe and also a space for your extra accessories, marked “Combat Gear” on the top shelf and “Weapons” and ‘Ammunitions” on the bottom compartment on the right hand side. Get one of these in hands and you will see all kinds of combat scenery for the young GI Joe or similar action figure player all over the inside and outside of the case. To add a little more collectability, there were two versions of this case. The earliest versions came with a blue plastic partition for the weapons and accessories that was supposed to look like “metal”. The plastic became brittle over time and dos not survive very well. The newer versions were made with the vinyl over cardboard like the rest of the case and had vibrant graphics which really were superior to the original blue plastic.
