Fairland Toy 6.5″ Sole Laundry Detergent Promotional Figures

Before I even get started here, I must say a few things. First, it is always exhilarating to discover something new! After 26 years of collecting, I thought I had seen it all, and then something like this pops up and BAM! It’s off to dig and find them! Second, thanks to Dennis Glinski, aka TOYDEN, for bringing these to my attention recently. What a rush! Finally, I would like to thank the people who provided insight and information into these figures. Paolo, my new friend from Italy, and this forum which was put up and deserves the majority of the credit here!:

Now on to the good stuff…..

So apparently this took place in the late 1970s to early 1980s. I am still clarifying this. For those of you that have not lived in Europe during this time period, many soaps/detergents were powder in small or large canisters with plastic handless – Much like Oxy Clean today. My mother used to save them for us to store toys like Legos, Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs. In any case, this detergent, “Sole” (“Sun” in English) ran commercials where actors portrayed the made up superheroes of this company as their promoters. UPDATE!! Did some digging and found an old Italian commercial with the live actor superheroes!!

Let’s take a look at who we have:

Flat Sun, Laundry Sun, Delicate Sun, Blue Sun, White Sun and Sun Drops – 6 characters in all of which 5 were male and one was a female. Furthermore the bodies and heads were slightly different as well. The bodies were a thin and wider version and according to the article the outfits needed to go with the correct one or they did not fit properly. These figures were made by Fairland Toy who was making figures in all sizes back in the day. Each figure is clearly stamped with that mark on their back. These are quite hard to come by. They were bagged up and put inside the laundry detergent in the powder or attached to the outside of the canister….
